Emerald Waterways is the first new European river cruise company to set sail in more than six years and aims to make a big splash in the fast-growing market. With the industry’s newest ships, custom-built to exceed guest’s expectations and offering such amenities as a heated swimming pool and a movie theater, Emerald Waterways is aiming at both experienced travelers and the younger demographic looking for strong value and great pricing.

Emerald Waterways, which launched in 2014, was recently awarded the Cruise Critic Editors Pick Award for “Best River Line for Value” for the second year in a row. In 2016 Emerald expanded its reach by adding several new itineraries on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers in Europe, and a 10-day sailing on the exotic Irrawaddy river in Myanmar. 2017 will see Emerald growing again, adding three new ships and two new itineraries: the Emerald Radiance will sail the picturesque Douro River in Portugal, while the Emerald Liberté will sail France’s Rhône and Saône. All Emerald ships feature the signature Emerald Waterways cabin design that replaces the French balcony, common to most ships, with an indoor balcony complete with decked area and an ingenious open-air system. Emerald Waterways is part of Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours.

French Country Waterways' five luxury barges carry eight to 18 passengers and ply scenic routes in Burgundy, Alsace-Lorraine, Champagne and the Upper Loire Valley on six-night cruises. The cruises depart weekly from April  through October and feature inclusive prices; a relaxed atmosphere; daily sightseeing excursions; and free time for sundeck relaxation, walking or bicycling along towpaths, village exploration, or optional hot-air ballooning.

Highlights include attentive service from a crew fluent in both English and French, open bar, wine tastings at every meal, and sumptuous meals both onboard and ashore. More than half the wines bear well-known labels from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, and dinners ashore are at Michelin-starred restaurants. Staterooms and suites have full- or king-size beds, generous storage space, individual air and heating controls, and private baths. Thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, extra pillows and hair dryers are always included.

Owner and creative director Samad Hachby has always dreamed of opening a high end Italian restaurant. The idea for Mulino came from Hachby’s long-standing passion for Italy. He was raised in Morocco but spent much of his youth in Italy – attending school on scholarships and working on an Italian cruise line, a job which instilled the love of hospitality in him. Italian is one of five languages in which he is fluent. “I’ve always wanted to focus on Italian food because of my life experiences, but I wanted to spend the time researching and immersing myself in Italian culinary traditions and theory,” said Hachby.  Offering simple, fresh Italian fare focusing on house-made pastas, wood-fired pizzas and an expansive Italian wine selection, Mulino aims to take guests on a journey through Italy with atmosphere, food, wine and conversation.

The Italian-inspired restaurant is located in the historic Melrose Knitting Mill, which dates to 1901 as a textile factory for the City of Raleigh. Hachby updated the interior of the historic building, garnering a well-deserved reputation, by blending modern design elements such as exposed wood rafters and an expansive tiled outdoor reflecting pool with large-scale photographs and historical images that line the walls. The most expansive remodeling came in the bar area which tells the story of a traveler to Rome or Milan through Italian poems, phrases, images and icons lining the bar top. The bar has also been remodeled to allow for tapas and light snacks called cichetti to be prepared in sight of patrons.
